The Spec – April 18 2021

For the second time this week, the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating a police incident in Durham.

The SIU is involved after a police officer discharged an anti-riot weapon called an ARWEN in Whitby on Saturday evening.

An AREWN (Anti Riot Weapon ENfiled) is a launcher that fires projectiles.

The SIU says the incident on April 17 started at about 8 m. when Durham police received a 911 call about a woman in distress. Police located the woman in the Henry Street and Dundas Street West area near the Whitby Public Library.

The SIU says there was an “interaction” and one officer discharged an ARWEN at the woman.

The woman did not sustain any serious injuries and was taken to hospital for assessment.

The SIU is involved because an ARWEN is classified as a firearm under the Special Investigations Unit Act.
